Monsters of Narratokia

Chapter 1 Chopping off Heads Saturday 21 July

Robespierre looked in disdain at the eleven year old girl and the purple Siamese cat squatting on its hind quarters on the flagstone floor. He could barely contain his anger and impatience. What on earth were this ragamuffin and this strange coloured cat doing in his private chamber? He was extremely tired. The Revolutionary Committee had been meeting throughout the whole day. He’d had to make some difficult decisions about whose head needed to be chopped off and he didn’t appreciate being woken up at two o’clock in the morning.

FANTASY CROCULOSAURUS MONSTERS`Who are you?’ he demanded pointing his index finger directly at the girl, his voice exploding with thunder.

`I’m Calypso,’ the girl replied in fluent French. `I’ve only just arrived in Paris. I live with my aunt Lullaby in Swiss Cottage in London. I know that I don’t look English. That’s because my mother is from Brazil. My father’s English though. I’ve no idea what this is all about.’

`Calypso, Swiss Cottage, Lullaby, Brazil,’ Robespierre repeated. `Very suspicious.’

`And I’m Atomic. I’m with her,’ said the Siamese cat.

`Atomic,’ Robespierre repeated to himself as he stood face to face with a talking cat. Had he lost his mind? Was this feline creature actually speaking to him? And not only speaking to him in French but in that posh accent of the aristocrats whom he despised. This couldn’t be real. Perhaps he was asleep? Could this just be a nightmare?

He needed time to understand what was going on. The revolution was making progress in changing society for the better but talkingFANTASY ROTTSNARLER MONSTERS cats hadn’t been part of the plan. Perhaps he was starting to lose his grip after so much blood-letting. Or maybe some devil-worshipping lord of the manor had escaped his reign of terror and disguised himself as a cat to escape punishment?

Robespierre turned his attention to the two Republican guards who had escorted the girl and the cat into his private quarters. `Why have you bought them here at this hour?’ he asked in a menacing tone. `I gave orders that I was not to be disturbed. I have important matters to resolve this night.’

`But we found them snooping around outside your front door,’ replied one of the guards nervously. FANTASY TERROX MONSTERS`You know how many royalist sympathisers there are who want to assassinate you at the moment. They both looked very suspicious to us.’

`A girl and a cat?’ Robespierre retorted still mystified.

`A girl and a cat who talk to each other in a weird foreign language that we can’t understand,’ replied the guard. `We’ve never heard anything like it – a lot of hissing and squeaking; must be oriental or something. And she’s got some kind of strange book that she keeps tapping with her finger. It’s got pages that light up. We think that she’s spying for the king, or else she’s sold her soul to the Devil. If she were normal, she wouldn’t be with a cat like that. Cats aren’t purple. It’s the work of Satan I tell you. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a witch.’Narratok Symbols

The guard brandished the book with illuminating pages as clear evidence that the girl was collaborating with the imprisoned French king Louis  16th……….
